All shanks we sell are for “3 Pattern” teeth (the 3 stamped on the shank).
The GAUGE (the number next to the “3” stamped on your shank) is the thickness of your blade.
Main blades are 8g.
Edger blades are usually 10g.
NOTE: If you order 10g shanks, your shanks MAY have a 9 on them. They still work. They do longer make 10g shanks, but we have a few left in inventory.
The SIZE (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) is the diameter of the shank.
As your blade wears it stretches a little so shanks get loose or worse they fly out. Before someone gets hurt or you lose teeth, you need to size up to larger shanks.
The difference between each size is 1/64″. You’ll know what size your shank is because there will be a tiny 2, 3, or 4 stamped on the shank. 1sts have no stamp except the 3 (for tooth type) and 8/9/10 (for the gauge). Sometimes it can be REALLY small and faint so look closely.
The TYPE refers to how the shank looks at end that holds the tooth.
Regular are standard and untreated.
Inlaid last longer because they are Stellite hard-faced like the teeth we offer. You don’t want to use shanks with rounded corners for the same reasons you don’t want to cut with dull teeth.
Frost keep the chips from freezing together in the winter and plugging up your blade.
