REPAIR
Replacing the CRANKSHAFT SEAL
1.) Remove the outside blower shroud.
2.) Mark the blower and blower bushing so that they can be put back together in the same location. FAILURE TO DO SO will result in the timing mark on the blower being in the wrong location. IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO TIME THE ENGINE.
3.) Remove the blower. This is done by removing the three bolts from the blower bushing and placing them in the three holes next to those from which they were removed. Now tighten the bolts – evenly – and the will force the blower and the blower bushing to separate. (There is a drawing in the operation manual portion of your parts manual.)
CAUTION: DO NOT USE A GEAR PULLER to separate the blower from the blower bushing. Damage to the blower or bushing may result. A puller can be used to remove the blower bushing from the crankshaft after the blower and bushing have been separated.
4.) To remove the crankshaft seal – Use a small punch and tap on one side of the seal. This should cause the opposite side to move out where you can remove it with a screw driver, pliers, etc. In some cases it may be necessary to drill a small hole in the seal and then use a sharp pointed tool to pry the seal out (such as an awl).
CAUTION: EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN to prevent damage to the crankshaft. Even light scratches in the area of the seal may result in an UNREPAIRABLE OIL LEAK.
5.) To install a new seal – First, coat the outside metal surface with a good quality GASKET SEALER. Put a light coat of oil on the rubber seal and slide the seal over the crankshaft. Use a short pipe with an outside diameter of 1-3/4 in (45mm) to tap the seal in flush with the seal housing.
6.) Reinstall the blower and outside blower shroud. TORQUE THE BLOWER BOLTS to 9 ft. lbs. (12.2 Nm). The bolts much be torqued several times to insure proper seating on the tapered blower bushing.
